For the best pop for your money, store your popcorn right

Storing popcorn right helps to keep kernels fresh

by Debi and Grant

Popcorn pops when the moisture in the kernel heats up. Each kernel requires 13.5 to 14 percent of moisture to pop. On a warm day, one percent of that moisture can evaporate, and that can have an impact on the quality of the pop in a popcorn popper. When three percent vanishes, the kernel can be rendered unpoppable. So to keep popcorn poppable, properly store your popcorn in an airtight container and in a cool cupboard. While any quality container will do, we’ve discovered that a good airtight coffee container works great to keep popcorn fresh.

Can popcorn be stored in the freezer to save it’s ability to pop?

A freezer will actually dry out the moisture from popcorn kernels. Since it’s the moisture that causes the popcorn to pop when heated, freezing the kernels will destroys the ability to pop. Best to store kernels in an airtight container.

Two years ago I bought a 35 lbs. bag of popcorn and stored it in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that seals very tight. I just emptied the bucket out today and every kernel still ‘explodes!
